‘Premium’ liquor store does bang-up business over holiday weekend

11/29/2005

By TIMOTHY LOGUE tlogue@delcotimes.com

SPRINGFIELD -- Though much quieter Monday, several bare shelves at the upscale Wine and Spirits store on Baltimore Pike served as a reminder of busier times. "We did $90,000 last Wednesday, which is unbelievable," said assistant manager Joe Ciciretti. "It was definitely a wine day. People were stocking up for Thanksgiving."

In terms of sales, it was the single busiest day in the short history of the "premium collection store," which opened four months ago at the former home of I. Goldberg’s.

The store replaced two former state store locations, one at Baltimore and Bishop avenues in Upper Darby, the other near the intersection of Baltimore and Saxer avenues in Springfield.

On the same day a year ago, the Upper Darby store did $49,000 in sales, also an extraordinary figure considering its limited size and selection.

"What’s happening in Delaware County is a microcosm of what’s happening statewide," said Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board Chairman Jonathan Newman. "People who used to resent the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board have come to appreciate the great customer service, attractive stores and the good product.

"In the last two years, we have seen the biggest year-over-year growth since 1945 and we are on target for another record year."

With supermarket stores in Boothwyn and Glen Mills, a new premium collection store in Drexel Hill at the Pilgrim Gardens Shopping Center, and two more coming to Media and Broomall, Delaware County shoppers have had a first-hand look at the transformation of the Pennsylvania state store.

"I remember the days when you would go to the counter and they wouldn’t suggest anything because they weren’t allowed to," said Anne O’Laughlin of Springfield, who picked up a bottle of Riesling at the Baltimore Pike store with the help of manager Andre Phelps. "The variety is definitely better and displays and labeling are much more user-friendly.

"I would say it’s improving but still not where we want it to be in terms of regulation, store location, and prices."

Indeed, even the "specials" at Pennsylvania state stores cost much more than they do in tax-free Delaware. A 1.75-liter bottle of Tanqueray gin on sale for $33.99 in Springfield is selling for $6 less at Tri-State Liquors in Claymont. The same was true for Jack Daniel’s whiskey, Grey Goose vodka and Beefeater gin.

"I’m from Montgomery County and I know people there and in Chester, Bucks and Delaware County who thought nothing of going out of state to buy their wine and liquor, even though it’s illegal," Newman said. "We have worked hard to keep that business at home."

Phelps, who began working in Pennsylvania state stores 30 years ago, said customers have been complimentary of his new store, which, in addition to more than 3,000 brands of wine and liquor, features glass and barware, cocktail onions and olives, and a temperature-controlled wine room for the ever-changing "premium collection."

"Back in the day, when a customer came up to the counter, they had to know what they wanted, and we would go back and get it for them," said Phelps, general manager of the Springfield store. "The job is much more difficult now. There’s a lot more variety and a lot more interaction with the customers.

"They appreciate the appearance and the selection."

The new Wine and Spirits store in Media, on Baltimore Pike between Lemon and Orange streets, is set to open Dec. 18. Newman said discussions are under way to open an outlet store "in the vicinity" of the Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack.

Woman said held captive, brutally beaten by ‘beast’

LINDA REILLY, Times Correspondent11/29/2005

UPPER DARBY -- A 41-year-old Drexel Hill woman was held captive over the weekend and allegedly brutalized by her boyfriend, who described himself as a "beast" during a police interview. "This is a really, really nasty domestic violence case," said Superintendent Michael Chitwood. "Our assumption is he was holding her hostage and was probably going to kill her and get rid of her."

Keith Patrick Dixon, 46, of the 4400 block of Township Line Road, Drexel Hill, was arrested late Monday morning and arraigned on charges of criminal attempt homicide, assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, possessing instruments of crime and tampering with physical evidence, by Magisterial District Judge Harry Karapalides, who set bail at $250,000 cash.

Police were summoned to the Tall Trees apartment complex by a maintenance man, who noticed a pool of blood near a Dumpster and a trail of blood leading to Building E.

Officers Mark Brown and Jerome Brown responded and knocked on Dixon’s door.

"It was clear to both officers that a disturbance had occurred inside the apartment," Detective Leo Hanshaw wrote in the affidavit, noting Dixon’s hands were bandaged with white medical tape and the victim was suffering from head, face, torso and arm injuries. She was also missing two front teeth.

She was interviewed at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment and described the horrific ordeal she allegedly endured from Saturday to Monday inside the apartment.

"Dixon pulled her out of the bed by her ankles," knocking her unconscious when her head hit the floor, Hanshaw wrote in the document. "She remembers awakening at one point and Dixon was throwing a lamp at her." He also allegedly broke every phone to prevent her from calling for help.

Dixon, 6 feet 3 inches tall and 225 pounds, allegedly kicked the woman numerous times, held his hands to her throat and pinned her down on the floor.

"When police came to the door, Dixon ordered her to go into the bathroom, run the water in the shower and not come out or say anything," Hanshaw wrote. But the officers insisted she come out, and Dixon was immediately taken into custody when they observed her condition.

"She was beaten so badly she’s disfigured," Chitwood said of the victim. "She is a very attractive woman and her face looks like a Frankenstein mask. We only found her because the maintenance man called about the bloody furniture in the Dumpster.

"He’s an animal, pure and simple."

Veteran Detective Lt. George Rhoades Jr. couldn’t recall a more brutal domestic assault case.

"I can’t think of any person that looked as bad as she does and is still alive," he said.

The View from Maine

Monday, November 28, 2005
There are two sides to every story, and this person has posted this comment; another side to the Beatty Chadwick saga. (Interesting, too, that this blog has reached Maine!)

Why didn't the Media, PA court take testimony from this witness re: the truthfulness of Mrs. Chadwick, Judge Battle we can understand cause he's 2 yards under but before Beatty joins him why don't you Judge Clouse, either take off the blindfold or put it back on and try the case===> here's just the first of Mrs. Chadwick's bad-character witnesses, read & weep for what you've done to an innocent man: Oh...we know all about what Mr.Chadwick is going through. How we know? We live next door to his ex-wife Barbara Chadwick. My husband and I have lived in the town of Thomaston for twenty-four years and Barbara Chadwick/aka Applegate had all kinds of suits against us (FALSE ALLIGATIONS) She and her new hubby thought they could come into a small town and brag about their wealth, dig for more money and rule us. Well, what they didn't know is that we are a tight knit little town and she thinks she can fool us like she is with the PA Judge. Our Lawyer saw right through her just as many in our town. The Judge on Chadwick/Applegate vs. Chadwick is so wrapped tight around Barbara's finger that it shows how weak the Judicial system can be. People think Mainers are backwards and stupid...Oh Ms. Applegate now knows she can't move our mountains. She sure plays quite a tune with Pennsylvania that must be a real stupid place to live! If they can't see through her negative ways and check on her legal history of taken people to Court...Wow! POOR Mr. Chadwick is stuck in the spiders web! We hope and pray for Mr. Chadwick's release. It is such a terrible thing to think that any sane decent human being can think that she/he can have so much power over someone to keep them squirming like a worm on a hook...it must be a personal thing with the individuals who have consumed such false power.

The Grave Threat Is the Bush Administration

By Paul Craig Roberts

11/28/05

Lew Rockwell --

According to news reports, at a US Naval Academy speech on Wednesday, President Bush will announce plans for withdrawing US troops from Iraq. It will be diverting to watch the propagandists at Fox "news" flip-flop with the White House line and explain that now is the time to cut and run after all.

A month ago the administration’s line was that cutting and running was the dastardly act of cowards and traitors who would abandon our troops and all they have fought for. A month ago senior US commanders in Iraq said that the US-trained new Iraqi army only had 700 troops who could operate independently of US support.

Now suddenly the new Iraq has the troops to do the job and America’s soldiers can come home. What this means is that Republican pollsters have made it clear that the Republicans cannot win next year’s congressional elections if the US is still mired in Iraq. The war is unpopular. A large majority of Americans do not believe the war was justified, and they no longer support it. Republicans have no prospect of rehabilitating Bush if he keeps the country bogged down in a pointless war.

The war, in other words, no longer serves the Republicans’ political interest and must be got rid of. So much for "staying the course."

What will happen to Iraq and the Middle East no one knows. Our concerns need to be directed at what happens here in the US. Bush’s war against Iraq might be over, but the police state Bush built at home is still in place.

On November 27 Walter Pincus reported in the Washington Post that the Pentagon is expanding its domestic surveillance activity and that all sorts of proposals are afoot to allow military agencies to spy on law-abiding Americans and to build secret dossiers on citizens. The demand for police state powers is said to be necessary in order to fight the "war on terror."

Considering the drastic gestapo-type activities for which Washington is clamoring, a person would think that America is being overwhelmed by terrorist attacks. Yet, despite an aggressive and brutal war that Bush has been waging in Iraq for going on three years, terrorist attacks in America are even more rare than an honest politician. There has not been a terror attack since September 11, 2001, more than four years ago!

The Bush administration’s hype about terrorism serves no purpose other than to build a police state that is far more dangerous to Americans than terrorists.

Ever since the "war on terror" was initiated by the Bush administration, the US has been holding large numbers of "detainees." By chance or the laws of probability, a few of these people might fit some definition of "terrorist." The vast majority, however, are innocents picked up in the equivalent of Stalin-era KGB street sweeps. Many are hapless people sold by warlords to the US in order to receive cash awards for turning in "terrorists."

Despite the large number of alleged "terrorists" or "enemy combatants" that are being held, the Bush administration simply hasn’t a shred of evidence with which to bring "detainees" to trial. If truth be known, the "detainees" are merely props for Bush’s hype about the "terrorist threat." The "detainees" were arrested in order to make Americans feel safe and at ease with the police state.

Perhaps the most famous of the alleged terrorists, a man held for more than three years, is the "dirty bomber" Jose Padilla. Padilla was the "grave threat" who was going to set off a radioactive dirty bomb in a US city.

The charge never made any sense. If al Qaeda had a dirty bomb, they certainly would not entrust it to the loud-mouthed Padilla, who was being followed around by FBI agents. Such a weapon would be kept secret and entrusted only to the most competent and proven hands. Who could possibly believe that top al Qaeda operatives would meet and plot with Jose Padilla?

The Bush administration has itself given up its Padilla fantasy. After three years of hype about this most dangerous of terrorists who allegedly intended to kill large numbers of Americans, the government’s indictment doesn’t mention dirty bombs or the murder of Americans. Instead, Padilla is indicted for conspiring "to commit at any place outside the United States acts that would constitute murder" for the purpose of advancing "violent jihad." Padilla is also charged with "conspiracy to provide material support for terrorists."

In other words, the government has no case against Padilla and is putting him on trial in the US for conspiring to kill unidentified foreigners in an effort to overthrow an unidentified foreign country. His case is lumped in with a case against four other persons, one or more of whom may have committed an actual crime that can be used to tar them all.

Both the Attorney General and President of the United States branded Padilla a "grave threat" to the lives of Americans. After three years of this propaganda, all the US government can come up with is the trumped up charge of conspiracy to kill foreigners and to provide support for terrorists.

A police state has to catch enemies in order to keep the people frightened and appreciative of the watchful eye of the police state. Now that the Padilla case has evaporated, the Bush administration has come up with a replacement. An American student of Arab descent, who was studying at a Saudi Arabian university, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy to assassinate President Bush. The indictment rests on the confession wrung out of the young man by torture in a Saudi prison.

Does anyone really believe that al Qaeda leaders would conspire with an American college student to assassinate President Bush? Indeed, President Bush has been Osama bin Laden’s greatest benefactor. Why would al Qaeda want to kill the man who is doing them so much good? Before Bush launched his war on terror and invaded Iraq, the vast majority of Muslims thought bin Laden was a nut case and supported the US. Today Muslims think Bush is a nut case and support bin Laden.

What kind of a country have we become when we put a citizen on trial on the basis of a confession obtained under torture by a foreign government? Is the case against this student anything other than an attempt to enlist the sympathy factor for Bush in order to repair his standing in the polls?

Americans need to understand that a police state has to produce results in order to justify its budget and its powers. It doesn’t really care who it catches. Stalin’s police state caught the wife of Stalin’s foreign minister in one of its street sweeps.

The Bush administration justifies torture and threatens to veto congressional attempts to restrain its use. The Bush administration justifies indefinite detention of American citizens without charges. It asserts the power of indefinite detention based on its subjective judgment about who is a threat. An American government that preaches "freedom and democracy" to the world claims the powers of tyrants as its own.

Americans need to wake up. The only danger to Americans in Iraq is the one Bush created by invading the country. The grave threat that Americans face is the Bush administration’s police state mentality.

Goss refuses to give Fitzgerald CIA leak damage assessment

Pentagon’s Wolfowitz and Feith espionage evidence before grand jury
George Tenet granted partial immunity to testify against White House

CIA: Plame outed to disrupt probe into Israeli attempt to plant WMD

Probe of 10+ legislators, high officials tied to drugs and 9-11 finance before jury

by Tom Flocco

WASHINGTON—November 26, 2005—TomFlocco.com—CIA Director Porter Goss is refusing to give special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald a subpoenaed damage assessment report written by former CIA Director George Tenet detailing how many American operatives were murdered and the full extent of harm to U.S. national security which resulted from the Bush administration leak exposing Valerie Plame Wilson as a deep cover operative, according to intelligence officials.

U.S. intelligence agents say Goss and the White House are obstructing justice by failing to cooperate with Fitzgerald’s grand jury while claiming that Americans are not entitled to see the contents of Tenet’s report for “national security” reasons.

In an interview with TomFlocco.com, national security expert Thomas Heneghan said American intelligence officials have evidence that Tenet took a $38 million dollar bribe to resign so the White House could blame the 9-11 attacks on faulty CIA intelligence.

Heneghan said Tenet and his family are currently being protected by U.S. intelligence, while also revealing that Fitzgerald has granted the former CIA Director transactional immunity in exchange for his testimony against the White House.

The evidence of Tenet’s bribe was discovered by federal investigators who said the money was laundered through Volksbank in Basel, Switzerland which also has links to deceased Bush family associate Leonard Millman and his former controversial partner, “Indian Casino” Jack Abramoff, according to Heneghan.

The intelligence whistleblower told us that evidence implicating former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith for violations of the Federal Espionage Act under U.S. Code Title 18, Section 793 is currently before Fitzgerald’s grand jury.

“Wolfowitz and Feith are agents of a foreign government, operating in the Bush administration to create spin as members of the secret White House Iraq Group,” said Heneghan, adding “they violated elements of the Espionage Act and bypassed the CIA in passing national security information to Israel.”

The assertions raise serious questions as to why the House and Senate are continuing to fail the American people by permitting spies to operate in the Pentagon, why President Bush would appoint agents of a foreign government to the Defense Department with access to military secrets, mission planning and technology—but also whether Congress is obstructing justice and condoning treason by the White House.

Plame team discovered attempt to plant WMD in Iraq

Heneghan told TomFlocco.com that Valerie Plame’s CIA group used the cover of Brewster-Jennings Energy Company “to investigate the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) issue in Iraq and how Turkey could have been used as an invasion pivot point using troops coming from the north and south that may have prevented the insurgency if they swept through quickly—and the firefights would have been prevented at the Baghdad airport, where many Americans lost their lives.”

Plame and her team discovered and interdicted an attempt to plant WMD by Mossad agents, masking themselves as Israeli military officers working unofficially in Baghdad with the United States Military Central Command and known as the J2X Joint Intelligence Liaison, according to the federal whistleblower.

Heneghan’s intelligence sources also revealed that “former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz was in command and control of the failed operation attempting to plant the WMD,” adding, “this was kept secret for the purpose of ‘discovering’ the weapons in order to justify the war.”

“The October, 2002 smuggling operation involving VX nerve gas and aluminum tubes may have traveled through the black market from provinces outside the Russian Federation and linked to rogue intelligence operative Gary Best, and then into Bosnia or Kosovo—but more likely Bosnia—and then into Turkey before being intercepted by Valerie Plame’s team; and this information is in the Tenet damage assessment report,” said Heneghan.

The Pakistan Daily Times reported that retired Navy Lt. Commander and 28 year Defense Department veteran Nelda Rogers, another Pentagon whistleblower, said “the Bush administration’s assurance about finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was based on a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) plan to 'plant' WMDs inside the country.”

It is not known whether the Fitzgerald grand jury has subpoenaed testimony from the former U.S. Navy officer, who said “the plan failed when the secret mission was mistakenly taken out by ‘friendly fire.’ “

These and other revelations raise more questions regarding why House and Senate members are not subpoenaed by Fitzgerald to publicly testify as to why they are obstructing justice by permitting the White House to commit treason against the American people.

Obstruction of justice and perjury

There is evidence that CIA Director Goss conspired with Vice President Cheney, and Republican senators, including Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and a Roberts staffer to leak the CIA “black site” foreign torture prisons story to Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Robert Woodward.

The leak was used for a November 2 story by Dana Priest in an attempt to obstruct justice by “an end-run to discredit the CIA and the Fitzgerald grand jury investigation,” according to news reports and U.S. intelligence, said Heneghan.

Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) reportedly blew the whistle on the obstruction, telling CNN “this subject was discussed at a Republican senators-only luncheon last Tuesday, the day before the story ran in the Washington Post,” adding “a lot of it came out of that room last Tuesday…He [Cheney] was up here last week …and every word that was said in there went right to the newspaper.”

Heneghan said “Robert Woodward could be indicted for obstruction of justice in this matter,” alleging that Goss originally leaked the secret information to Republican senators who then passed the story to Woodward and Priest in violation of senate ethics rules at the least according to Lott’s prediction.

Woodward’s admitted knowledge of Valerie Plame’s covert identity since June-July, 2003 raises additional obstruction of justice questions since the Post editor has for two years been publicly casting doubt on Fitzgerald’s probe as insignificant and unimportant.

Woodward concealed his conflict of interest until last week regarding his role as a key player and possible focal point in the alleged obstruction of justice in the Plame case.

Reports reveal evidence that either Woodward or Post reporter Walter Pincus is not telling the truth, since Pincus and Post reporter Glenn Kessler have been questioned in the Plame investigation; and Woodward claimed to have told Pincus about Plame’s covert CIA status, to which Pincus replied, “Are you kidding, I certainly would have remembered that.”

Since Fitzgerald just found out about Woodward’s central role in the Plame case, it is obvious that Pincus never told the prosecutor about Woodward’s claim when Pincus testified before the grand jury, allegedly revealing that one of the two is not telling the truth.

In a startling revelation, Heneghan said “There are U.S. intelligence files and field reports which identify Bob Woodward as a deep cover member of the Office of Naval Intelligence with links to the Israeli Mossad,” adding, “there are also serious questions as to why Woodward was the first to obtain the CIA-Valerie Plame leak story and what role it played in his book which attempted to portray Bush as an ‘in-command’ leader.“

“There are also intelligence files indicating that Woodward’s retired boss and former Washington Post Editor-in-Chief Ben Bradlee is closely linked to the Mossad and knows the true story of President Kennedy’s assassination,” said Heneghan.

U.S. legislators, public officials linked to drug money and 9-11 finance

In a related issue, intelligence sources say a probe of about 10 federal legislators and high government officials linked to drug money laundering through the Middle and Far East and the finance of the September 11 attacks is currently before the Patrick Fitzgerald grand jury.

The investigation of well-known American public officials is also reportedly tied to a Washington appeals court cover-up by three Republican judges and Justice Department attorneys involved in the obstruction of justice and gagging of former FBI contract linguist Sibel Edmonds.

When we asked how many Americans were named in the intelligence intercepts and linked to drug money laundering or 9-11 finance that she translated, Edmonds told TomFlocco.com, "There is direct evidence involving no more than ten American names that I recognized," further revealing that "some are heads of government agencies or politicians—but I don’t want to go any further than that," attempting to stay within the guidelines of her court gag order.

Edmonds said, "Nobody is looking at the Department of Defense aspect of the whole 911 cover-up. The FBI is citing two reasons for my gag order: to protect ‘sensitive’ diplomatic relations and to protect foreign U.S. business relationships."

Heneghan told us “there is a major split developing in the United States media—the ones that want to tell the truth and the ones that do not,” causing more questions to be raised about implied obstruction of justice within all levels of American news groups.
